A True Story of Food, Love, and War in the Orient

lillias feastThere exists a cookery book that was written by a woman on the brink of starvation in a Japanese internment camp in China during the Second World War.

“You would expect from a wartime recipe book – all rations and digging for victory, or subsistence on rotting vegetables and donkey meat in a Japanese internment camp. However, this is a book written as if the war wasn’t there at all. As if everyone was back in their warm, safe homes with their families and friends, the larder full and the table heaving with fresh, just-cooked food. It gives advice on how to make good things last longer, how to live and eat to the fullest. The pages are jam-packed with recipes with old-fashioned names: cream puffs and popovers, butterscotch and blancmange, galantine of beef and anchovy toast, jugged hare and ulligatawny soup. There are dinner-party menus, children’s menus, cocktails, ice creams, sweets. Its a book for making the best of times in the worst of times, a book that makes you believe that if you could fill your mind with cream cake or anything delicious, then you could transform the bitterest experience into something sweet and shut out the things that you need to forget.”

obag

How many times have you heard the expression “be there or be square?” Well, now you never have to worry about arriving square. It looks like designer Roov Mousavi has reinvented the wheel.

Samsonite has developed what they call the OBAG, which as you can see is a round piece of luggage. This probably is not the best luggage to carry your clothes in (my guess is the inside of your bag would look something like the inside of your dryer.) I think they are marketing this as a carry on bag or a “roll on” bag if you will. However, I will not be surprised if eventually Samsonite rolls out an entire OBAG luggage line. (more…)

Handy Gadget or Another Way to Embarrass your Travel Companions

Handy Gadget
Every Christmas my dad prides himself in coming up with the most unique stocking stuffers for my brother and I. I admit that he usually finds unique gifts that are very appropriate for the receiver.

Somewhere my dad had found this gadget called Luggage Locator. For complete details watch the YouTube video linked to Luggage Locator…its actually pretty funny. Here is what it says on the back of the box:

  • Easily locate your luggage up to 60 feet away with a series of beeps and flashes set off by a remote small enough to fit in your pocket
  • A radio frequency signal seeks out the receiver attached to your luggage so you can rest easy knowing your luggage arrived at its destination long before you even see it

Do I really want to be the person who claims the loudly beeping and convulsively flashing bag? Probably not but honestly I have been in a couple situations where something like this would have come in handy so it may be worth while to slap one of your luggage just in case. I tested it out in my house….it beeps loudly and as obnoxiously as possible! I am looking forward to seeing the looks on my fellow passengers faces when they see AND hear my luggage passing by on the carousel.
