One Stop Swap Shop

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

I mentioned Points.com in a previous post where I spoke about my crazy habits of buying airline tickets even though I have plenty of “points” or “miles” that I could redeem for free travel. The title of that post was Why am I a Frequent Buyer if I am a Frequent Flier? I don’t think I have logged on to my Points.com account since I wrote that post. However, about every 6 months I browse through my frequent flier programs just to make sure points are not expiring and also to get a running tally of where I stand. Tonight must have been a 6 month mark because there I was logging into countless frequent flier programs. Then Points.com popped into my head and I immediately wanted to see what this Toronto based company was up to.

The website has definitely improved since I last saw it and they are now partnered with more point programs than ever before. The concept is simple…its a one stop swap shop. The most obvious function of the website is to track all of your point programs in one central location and we are not talking just airlines but also hotels, credit cards, and retail rewards programs. However, what I think is the most useful function of Points.com is the ability to unload your points from one central location. (more…)

Japanese Sushi Documentary

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

So, you have mastered your local sushi joint to the point where you are BFF with the sushi chef. Suddenly you find yourself in Japan and the rules have changed. Sushi consumption is a culture. A culture with rules and regulations, especially in the country where it originated (actually, research shows that in some former century sushi originated in China, or maybe Southeast Asia but lets leave that for another post.) Point is, this video, albiet a little silly, is completely necessary in understanding the proper way to eat sushi in Japan. Check it out:

Travel Toothbrush Tip

Friday, January 8th, 2010

In my opinion there is no great way to travel with a toothbrush. It sort of disturbs me just throwing a toothbrush in a suitcase and those travel tubes have to be breeding grounds for everything bad. Up until now my technique was to always pack a brand new, still packaged toothbrush in my suitcase. This worked great until I realized I was buying way too many toothbrushes and what do you do when you are making multiple stops in one trip?

The next best answer to my toothbrush dilemma recent became obvious to me. Those of you who know me, know that I have serious problems making flights on time. I am usually rushing out of the house while I am simultaneously checking my iPhone to what time the next flight will be departing. In this situation, one thing is bound to happen…I forget my toothbrush. So what I always wind up doing is calling housekeeping at my hotel and asking for a toothbrush. This has probably happened to me the last 7 times I have checked into a hotel. So I thought, why bother buying and packing a new toothbrush every time I travel when I can get them for free at most hotels. This also solves the problem of how to pack a toothbrush.

So there is my travel toothbrush tip. Every time I check into a hotel I ask for a toothbrush (they even throw in toothpaste and mouthwash if you ask.) Its not the holy grail of travel tips but it works for me! You may want to have an emergency toothbrush stashed in your suitcase just incase your hotel doesn’t have one. However, 98% of the time any small, big, 3 star, or 5 star hotel will have one.

How to Successfully Eat Your Way Through Morocco

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Like all international cuisines there is a difference between eating Moroccan food in the U.S. versus eating it in Morocco. In the U.S. your culinary curiosity may cause you to walk into the local Moroccan restaurant, order some chicken tagine, and ultimately leave satisfied and eager to return. Most likely you will return a month or more later, order the lamb tagine and start the process over. In Morocco the process is vastly different and travelers who think they love Moroccan cuisine can easily grow tired of it without proper planning.

In my opinion, Morocco is not one of those countries where you can jump into the culinary world feet first and hope that your ad hoc way of choosing restaurants works. I know this because I am one who jumps in feet first and in Morocco I hit the bottom only because I didn’t know how deep the pool was. The key to successfully eating your way through the wonderful Kingdom of Morocco is this…Pace yourself. Its difficult to pace yourself when you do not know what to expect so here are some tips that I have learned during my time in Morocco: (more…)
