Why am I a Frequent Buyer if I am a Frequent Flier?

FIVE. 5 is the number of domestic airline tickets I could have purchased using my frequent flier points about two months ago. TWO AND A HALF. 2.5 is the number of domestic airline tickets I can purchase  today using my frequent flier points.

I earn frequent flier points fairly frequently given my career in the travel industry. At any given point in time there is a very good chance that I have enough points to earn myself a free plane ticket. What is odd is that 4 out of 5 times I book a plane ticket, I buy it with cold hard cash! Why do I do this? I guess I was saving these free tickets for a rainy day, retirement, or maybe I have no rhyme or reason for holding on to my frequent flier points.

Fight the Hunger

We all know that fitting in isn’t always easy. Therefore, it helps to know a little bit about social norms and traditions before you travel. Here is a little something you should know about Argentinean nightlife:

itangoThe goal to fitting in with Argentinean culture is to always arrive late, never early or even on time unless you want to commit social suicide. Do not even be seen at a restaurant before 9pm (odds are will not find one open anyway) and never arrive at a bar before midnight or at a nightclub before 2am. This may sound like one of those extreme tourist tips that the locals would laugh at. And if you are anything like me, you will brush off this tip and head to dinner just about when you stomach starts to growl around 7pm. However, bear in mind that if you want to keep up with Argentineans, you need to be prepared to stay out late, very late, so the extra time that you will acquire in the evenings by abiding by this rule, will be ideal for a nap. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Kiss or Kiss Kiss?

kiss kiss
I am advocate for embracing different cultures and I have definitely mumbled the words “when in Rome” from time to time. However, its not easy keeping track of numerous cultural traditions. Therefore, when you do like the locals but you are not a local, you run the risk of…doing it wrong.

The most difficult cultural tradition for me to remember is the kiss on the cheek greeting. Some countries prefer one cheek, others prefer two cheeks, and then there is me who kind of lingers in between the one and two cheek kiss. I always wonder if my greeter feels as uncomfortable as I look. These customs usually leave me wondering things such as: How loud should my kiss be? Or, do I actually kiss the cheek or just make a kiss like motion in the general vicinity of the cheek? Quite honestly I can’t really answer these questions because I haven’t figured it out myself. Hopefully, however, I can clarify which countries prefer which technique. (more…)

Dine Out and Veg Out

Happy CowI love the thrill of dining out while traveling and searching through tantalizing menu items, anticipating the tastes and flavors of previously unknown dishes. I am lucky in that I am able and willing to try just about anything.

Let’s see, there was the sea urchin in Japan (tastes like tuna tartare,) bone marrow in New York City, and the unidentified object in Thailand. However, I find it a tad intimidating and frustrating trying to search for that perfect restaurant while traveling. Therefore, I can only imagine how difficult it is to search for restaurants abroad for people who have dietary restrictions or preferred dining habits. In addition, being a vegetarian must be especially difficult in countries where meat is the main ingredient i.e. Brazil or Argentina. (more…)
